Many people color their hair in order to draw attention to themselves by changing their appearance or maybe to make themselves feel better or stand out more. People with blonde hair often want darker hair and people with darker hair often want to go blonde. It’s pretty simple to go from blonde to dark hair. However, going from darker hair to blonde requires quite a bit more effort and is much more damaging to the hair. We should keep in mind that hair coloring tends to make hair dry and brittle while increasing porosity. So if you want to go from dark hair to maybe a strawberry blonde hair color, it is possible. You just want to keep in mind that you will have to take extra precautions to minimize the damage to your hair and get your hair healthy again afterward.
The first step to minimizing the damage that will be done by your strawberry blonde hair color is to use two full weeks of deep conditioning your hair with a deep conditioner rich in protein if at all possible. If you’re going from dark brown to strawberry blonde, you’ll need three boxes of hair color. Make sure they are all three the same brand. To minimize the damage to your hair, choose a brand that is ammonia free. When you color your hair, you definitely don’t want to use heat styling if you can avoid it as this will add to the damage. Another thing to keep in mind is that many people may have an allergic reaction to hair dye. The best way to avoid this is to read the instructions on the box and perform their recommended allergy tests.
The first one will be a light brown to lighten your hair so that the strawberry blonde hair color will take later on. Be sure to follow the instructions for application and recommended processing time. A day after applying the light brown hair color, you’ll want to do another deep conditioning of your hair to restore some strength. A shampoo and conditioner free of sulfate is best to use for the deep conditioning as sulfate will strip moisture and color from your hair.
About a week after coloring your hair with the light brown, you will use the dark blonde color as the next step to getting to your desired strawberry blonde hair color. Again, the day after coloring with the dark blonde, you’ll want to deep condition your hair. When hair is color treated multiple times, it naturally becomes real brittle and porous. Making sure to use shampoo that is free of sulfate and refraining from using heated styling will help to avoid this.
A week after you have applied the dark blonde you can go ahead and apply the strawberry blonde hair color. You’ll want to deep condition the next day again and continue doing so at least once a week to help rebuild the strength in your hair. Continue to refrain from heat styling such as curling irons and try to use sulfate free shampoo and conditioner to help get your hair healthy again.
